Budget 2027 consultations begin in Gozo with connectivity and investment in focus

Prime Minister Robert Abela has opened Budget 2027 consultations in Gozo, prioritising connectivity, infrastructure, and economic diversification as key themes.
Prime Minister Robert Abela has launched the consultation process for Budget 2027, with the first meeting held in Gozo, according to MaltaToday. The session with the Gozo Regional Committee focused on the island's economic future, the opportunities emerging from growth, and the challenges posed by continued development.
Connectivity between Malta and Gozo emerged as a central business concern. The government is pushing for more efficient and reliable transport links for workers, students, families, and companies. A tender for a fourth vessel has drawn interest from two operators, while the fast ferry service is on track to carry nearly two million passengers by year-end.
For businesses operating in or considering Gozo, these infrastructure upgrades directly affect logistics, talent access, and operational costs. The prime minister said the government remains committed to measures that put quality of life at the centre of its decisions, a signal that development will be balanced with sustainability.
Public infrastructure and urban regeneration are also high on the agenda. Abela pointed to further improvements in roads, public spaces, and village centres, alongside investment in safety and accessibility. The same approach extends to sport, culture, and recreational facilities, with more quality spaces planned for young people and families.
The Gozo Regional Committee submitted proposals built on five pillars: accessibility and connectivity, health, economic diversification, education and human capital, and energy, environment, and climate change. These pillars reflect the need to move beyond tourism, which remains a key economic driver, and attract quality investment that creates sustainable jobs, particularly for young people.
Gozo has posted strong socioeconomic performance in recent years, with rising business confidence and growing economic activity. But the emphasis on diversification suggests the government sees risk in over-reliance on any single sector.
Ministers Anton Refalo, Silvio Schembri, Clint Camilleri, Clyde Caruana, and Jo Etienne Abela attended the meeting, along with the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Mark Mallia. Their presence underscores the cross-portfolio importance of Gozo’s development agenda.
For Malta’s business community, the Budget 2027 consultation signals that Gozo is being positioned as a testbed for balanced, quality-led growth. The outcome will shape investment decisions, infrastructure spending, and the regulatory environment for years to come.
