Malta Airport's August traffic: 1.2m passengers, 89% load factor, but Germany and France slip
Malta International Airport recorded over 1.2 million passengers in August, with seat load factor hitting 89.3% despite a 15% capacity increase. Italy and Poland drove growth while Germany and France declined.
Malta International Airport handled more than 7,200 aircraft movements in August, a 12.4% increase over the same month last year. Over 1.2 million passengers travelled through the terminal, representing year-on-year growth of 12.3%.
Seat capacity rose 15.2%, yet the seat load factor reached 89.3%, signalling robust demand. The airport’s network now covers over 120 destinations, with Rome Fiumicino emerging as the most popular airport.
Italy retained its position as the top traffic source with a 20.6% market share. The United Kingdom and Poland posted double-digit growth, while Germany and France recorded declines of 4.8% and 10.8% respectively.
The contrasting performance of source markets carries implications for airlines and tourism operators. Poland’s 49.6% surge suggests a rapidly growing market, while the decline in German and French traffic may reflect shifting consumer preferences or competitive pressures.
For Malta’s tourism sector, the data points to an evolving demand picture. The strong overall load factor indicates that airlines are managing capacity effectively, but the market mix is changing. Operators may need to adjust their marketing and route strategies to capitalise on the strongest growth corridors.
